Here are some of the best tools and resources on the Internet that I’ve collected and use to build and tweak my own online businesses. Most of the these tools are free but, even so, that doesn’t mean they don’t have value. Quite the contrary! All of the free tools shown here are a great value and belong in your toolbox. Having the right tools will save you a ton of time, keep you organized, give you better results, and help you make more money online. I’ve gone to a lot of trouble for you here, so I hope you appreciate it. I suggest you cherry pick through the list and follow the links provided and create a shortcut from each tool web site you like to your hard drive toolbox file, or your Favorites file. This way you can find them easily when you need them. Lynda: This site teaches software through online tutorials and business skills. They offer 1,591 courses and teach web design, photography, graphic design, business, video, audio, 3D animation, Adobe programs, Flash, Photoshop, Windows, and an entire suite of software programs. FEE
39 Articles: This Egyptian site is a blog resource for web designing tutorials and offers a free website. FREE
osTicket: This is a widely-used open source support ticket system. It integrates inquiries created via web-based forms, email, or phone into a simple, easy-to-use multi-user web interface. You can manage, organize and archive all your support requests and responses in one place while providing your customers with accountability and responsiveness they deserve. It is simple, lightweight, reliable, open source, web-based and easy to setup and use. FREE
Firebug: This Firefox extension allows you to look at any page on the web as usual or select specific elements and see what code (including lines in style sheets) is responsible for the appearance of that element. As you select different areas on the web page, Firebug changes the code displayed. Great for isolating issues and reviewing competitor’s code. FREE
CSS Validator: A free W3C tool that validates your CSS and (X) HTML documents for compliance. FREE

Snippely: This is a basic text and code organizational tool, great for creating content. Instead of storing bits of code, quick notes, and memos in text files all over your hard drive, this tool will let you save and organize “snippets” in one convenient location. A snippet is a collection of one or several pieces of code and notes stored in groups for organization and quick retrieval. FREE
Xenu’s Link Sleuth: This site runs a crawler over your site and finds all your broken links. FREE
URL-Redirect Checker: This checks the status of a redirect and verifies if it’s delivering the right response. FREE
UpTimeRobot: This tool monitors up to fifty of your sites and lets you know when they are down. FREE
Alexa: This site is Alexa Internet, Inc., a subsidiary company of Amazon.com, based in California. The Alexa toolbar collects data on browsing behavior and transmits it to the website, where it is stored and analyzed, forming the basis for the company’s web traffic reporting. Alexa provides traffic data, global rankings and other information on 30 million websites, and claims that 6 million people visit its website monthly. FREE
Wayback Machine: This site is a digital time capsule created by the Internet Archive, a non-profit organization, based in San Francisco, California. It is maintained with content from Alexa Internet. This service enables users to see archived versions of certain web pages across time, which the Archive calls a “three dimensional index”. FREE
Excite: This site is the leading personalization Web portal, featuring world-class search, content and functionality. From financial portfolios to sports scores, local weather, etc. FREE
Page Speed Test: This tests the loading speed of your page and offers suggestions on how to improve it. Also, you can compare your results with any other site. FREE
Jing: This neat little tool allows screen captures. You can create videos and images of what you see on your computer screen, then share them instantly! FREE
Browser Shots: This open-source web application tool makes screenshots of your web design in different operating systems and browsers. It provides developers a convenient way to test their website’s browser function from a single location. Submit your URL and a number of distributed computers will open your website in their browser and make screenshots of your home page. These will be uploaded to a central dedicated server for your review. FREE
YSlow: This site analyzes web pages and suggests ways to improve their performance based on a set of rules for high performance web pages. It grades web pages based on one of three predefined rule-sets, it summarizes the page’s components, displays statistics, and provides tools for performance analysis.
Smushit: This tool is a “loss-less” tool, which means it optimizes the images without changing their look or visual quality. It allows images to be edited to reduce their file size while retaining image quality by using optimization techniques specific to image format to remove unnecessary bytes from image files.
BuiltWith: This site is a web site profiler tool that allows you to input a URL and have it analyzed according to how it was built and what components it has in it. Upon looking up a page, it returns all the technologies it can find on the page. It’s goal is to help designers, developers, and researchers to find out what technologies websites are using. WordPress: is the best content management system for your dynamic website. It is easy to install and very user-friendly. You can write and maintain content for your website easily and it is great for blogs. Also, it is extremely search engine friendly which means that you’ll have greater presence in Google, Yahoo and Bing and, therefore, attract more free visitors to your site! It comes with free themes and plug-ins, but you can also purchase a variety of designs to suit your taste. FREE
KompoZer: This is a widely-used open source HTML editor derived from NVU with WYSIWYG and HTML design modes. It allows you to create and edit your own web pages and is great for creating landing pages and adding text as content. It is very user-friendly and you don’t need any special programming skills. Gimp: This open source software allows image editing with all the functionality of Adobe Photoshop, but without the hefty price tag. Graphics and images play a big part of creating an online presence and this tool will help you easily edit all your images. FREE
Paint.Net: This program is a free image editing software that provides advanced image editing capabilities typically only available in paid software editing programs. It provides a very easy user interface and is able to assist your design goals with intuitive product features such as layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful graphic tools. Audacity: This open source software allows you to play, edit, and record all audio files as well as do slicing and mixing. It is great for adding audio clips to websites and emails. FREE
FreeFoto: This site offers the largest collection of free photographs on the Internet (link back and attribution required). FREE
Fotolia: This site is a stock photography website where members buy and sell images for use in their projects. It offers low-priced royalty free images using the credit subscription system. Get your images for your websites, presentations, and advertisements here at affordable prices. FEE
CopyrightFreePhotos: This site makes available royalty free photos, free of charge, for any application you require – web design, graphics, backgrounds, printed images, desktop wallpaper & screensavers. ImageMagick: This software suite allows you to easily resize your photos so you can email them or upload them to a website. It creates, edits, composes, or converts bitmap images and can read and write images in DPX, EXR, GIF, JPEG, JPEG-2000, PDF, PhotoCD, PNG, Postscript, SVG, and TIFF. Word Counter: This tool instantly counts the number of words and characters in your text, as you type your documents. FREE
Adwords Wrapper: This is the original online, time-saving keyword tool for use in Google Adwords campaigns. It wraps your keywords in “quotation marks” (phrase match) and [square brackets] for exact match. FREE
Instant Squeeze Page Generator: This service offers various Internet marketing tools and services by Robert Puddy. It helps you create squeeze pages using a simple point and click system. Open Site Explorer: This is a very user-friendly tool providing anchor text data, authority, and follow status. The index is somewhat limited and may miss some links in the “deep web” but otherwise useful. FREE
Backlink Checker: This tool offers instant, online reports pertaining to the number of backlinks pointing to your domain or webpage URL by the top two search engines; Bing and Google. FREE
BacklinkWatch!: This index pulls the first 1,000 links for a page and appends the number of outbound links on the source page along with nofollow, image links, and other flags they find. FREE
Google: Their “link” operator tool isn’t complete, but it still has some useful qualities. FREE
BuzzStream: This Web-based software is for SEO link building, social media marketing and public relations. It helps the world’s best marketers promote their products, services and content online. by eliminating the time-sucking parts of link building so you can focus on building quality relationships with link partners. PointBlankSEO: This site is an SEO link building blog dedicated to providing the top link building strategies on the Web. Jon Cooper’s site offers link building strategies, link building resources, a training course, a link building campaign guide, and a discussion by 24 SEO experts on tweets vs. links. FREE
Yahoo Site Explorer: This index is considered fast when it comes to finding new links, but it is very limited because it only returns 1,000 links per page or domain, with no extra data such as follow status or filtering options. FREE
Majestic SEO: This tool offers some very useful ways for tearing apart your competitor backlinks. It is a well-regarded index of data with information about Class C IPs, authority, anchor text, and relevance, plus good sorting and filtering. For researching competitor backlinks, this is a good tool for comparing multiple competitors to find niche link hubs and break down individual domains into very accurate data. $50/month

SEOmoz: This is an entire collection of professional-grade tools well worth the price of admission. This is the largest SEO community online. These tools cover everything from links, to onsite, to social media and make SEO management easy. $99/month
RavenTools: This alternative SEO tool collection includes link building, SEO management, research and competitor analysis. It doesn’t quite match up to the SEOmoz suite for pure function, but the reporting abilities have some distinct advantages. It features advertising tools, PPC research and management, metrics, reporting, tasks and messaging, social media management and monitoring, $99/month
SEO For Firefox: This is a free Firefox extension from SEO Book. It is similar to SEO Quake but has different data sources. FREE
XML Sitemaps: This is a free XML sitemap generator to include in your SEO toolbox. You can create four different sitemaps: a text sitemap, and html sitemap, a ROR sitemap, and a XML sitemap that you can submit to search engines to enable them crawl your website better. FREE
TrafficSwarm: This is an online traffic exchange that provides free traffic to your website or affiliate offer. Trafficswarm not only does this but much more. Just by creating your free account, you will be able to enter a URL to major search engine submissions such as Google, make a free website yourself, surfing to gain credits to show your free websites more, and improve your website ranking. Safe-Swaps: This service allows you to swap ads with reputable ad swap partners. You can automate your ad swaps, sell your own solo ads, or buy solo mailings easily and securely. FREE signup
Spyfu: This is a paid service that allows you to spy on your Adwords competitiors, and they offer some free tools to do it. You put in your best keyword phrase and they will show you who your top Adwords competitors are and what ads they are running. SEMrush: This site was created by SEO/SEM professionals for SEO/SEM professionals. It claims to be the most advanced SEO keyword research tool. They also collect massive amounts of SERP data for more than 95 million keywords and 45 million domains, including: AdWords ad copies and positions, organic positions for domains and landing URLs, search volumes, CPC, competition, number of results, and much more. It also assists with researching how products are advertised and finding the best way to phrase advertising text. FEE

Attention Wizard: This tool is for website designers and marketers and it allows them to validate web designs before they go live. It creates an algorithm-generated heatmap of a website page, which is as good as a first stop when you’re facing a redesign or A/B testing. This tool gives you valuable insights to help you optimize the branding, images, colors, layout, and buttons on key landing pages before presenting it to your boss or client. YouTube Keyword Tool: This tool will let you see what volume of searches are made for specific keywords each month. Use it to get new keyword ideas. YouTube is the dominant video search engine, so this really belongs in your toolbox. FREE
is.gd: This is an affiliate link cloacker and link shortener that will compress your address. FREE
Bitly: This is another link shortener that will keep thieves from stealing your affiliate links and it also provides link tracking to show you how popular your shared links become. FREE
YouTube Trends Dashboard: This tool shows what videos are trending in a specific country by gender and age group. It is ideal for spotting content to advertise against and for finding out what’s hot on YouTube. You can also visit a trends blog too. FREE
Crazy Egg: This site uses eye tracking technology and produces a heatmap of your pages based on user behavior that lets you see what’s hot and what’s not on your site so you can make changes to increase conversions. This tool also shows how far down your page visitors are scrolling, their clicks on page elements, and the sources of clicks, etc. broken down by traffic source. $9/month
Nanacast: This site automates your business with services designed for the online marketer. It manages unlimited sales funnels and product delivery, upsells and downsells, coupons, and hassle free secure checkout processes; all customizable to fit your business, large or small. It does it all from customer management and content delivery to affiliate management and billing. FEE
ClickTale: This service records your visitors and watches how they interact with your site. It costs $99/month but provides valuable insight into how your traffic navigates your website so you can make changes that will increase conversion rates.
User Testing: This service allows you to see why visitors leave your website. They send visitors through your site and listen to them interact and record them on video. Visitors record their visits following your directions and provide written and verbal feedback on any problems they encountered. This is a great tool to use during a redesign. $39/visitor
Wirify: This is a fun tool that turns any web page into a wire-frame and lets you see the big picture. For $6 extra you can buy a credit that makes the wire-frame editable. All web designers should use this tool. FREE
Five Second Test: This service allows you to create free usability tests for your site and analyse the most prominent elements of your design on your landing pages. Visitors land at a snapshot of your site, view it for 5 seconds, and then answer questions to facilitate landing page optimization for your mocks and wire-frames. With the free version you’ll have to earn tests by viewing other’s web pages and then providing comments. There is a paid service upgrade from $20/mth, but signup is FREE.
Clickbank: This payment processor makes it easy if you have a digital product you want to sell. Clickbank takes care of everything; they handle credit card payments, process refunds, and they also handle affiliate commissions. FREE ACCOUNT
CB-Analytics: This site allows you to determine which products on Clickbank are best sellers. It gives you trends and analytics on all ClickBank products and is updated daily. This is an excellent research tool when you are trying to select your next profitable product to promote. FREE
PaySpree: This website allows you to buy or sell digital products online and get paid instantly. You can either be a vendor or an affiliate and make money from your own products or those of other vendors. Membership is FREE
PayPal: This is a great alternative for payment processing and probably the most popular service online. Their fees are reasonable and it allows the user more hands on control. The reporting is excellent and the site is user-friendly. FREE ACCOUNT
COMMUNICATION, ADMINISTRATION, AND CONVENIENCE TOOLS
Gmail: This is the best email service online. It is by Google and has become a very popular email client with lots of useful features. You can forward email from a gmail account to another email account, or from your website email to a gmail account, plus it has a large capacity if you like to save your messages. Use a gmail account with its great spam filter to sign up for services and giveaways and reserve your email account from your ISP for other business. FREE
GotVmail: This service allows you to manage your voice mail. It is designed for entrepreneurs. $12/mo. FEE
IMI Organizer Map: This tool was designed by a professional knowledge management expert so you will never lose another file again! It will help you keep track of all your downloads, including your software, themes, plugins, and ecommerce programs. FEE
Signature Generator: This tool enables you to place your email address on websites and avoid a spammer’s robot finding it. This service creates an image file that can be read by humans but not by the robots. Just select the desired email generator and save the image to your pc and upload it to your server or a free image hosting server like Image shack/Photo bucket and then hotlink to the image. FREE
Sketchcast.com: This is a blogging tool to create sketches including voice-over. Bloggers can record a series of sketches and voice to explain an idea, make art, or just play around. After recording the information, users simply embed the sketch player into their blog or connect people to your sketch channel. It has an infinite number of uses.
FireFTP: It’s a convenient FTP client built into the Firefox browser. FREE
Filezilla: This is an open source FTP client that is the most widely-used. FREE
Doro-PDF-Writer: This software installs a virtual printer on your system and can easily create PDF documents from any printing-capable Windows application. Plus it doesn’t add any advertising lines or watermarks to your documents. FREE
Do PDF: This software allows you to create PDF documents from MS Word files. If you create reports and eBooks, then you will need a handy tool like this. FREE
Avast: This is an anti-virus program that offers a variety of scanning options and eight shields to protect you system. It features a quick scan, a full system scan, a removable media scan, a designated file scan, and a boot-time that runs before Windows is loaded before malware has a chance to activate and do any damage. It automatically updates so that it always has current information to protect your system.
